I fell in love with this pueblo the same way many visitors from abroad have done making Ajijic their new home.

La banda angelina La Santa Cecilia, fue nominada por primera vez a un Latin Grammy por su sencillo La Negra, del álbum Noches y citas.
Me da gran satisfacción ver el reconocimiento que, finalmente, llega a estos chicos talentosos, a quienes he tenido la fortuna de ver crecer musicalmente. Sobre todo a su vocalista Marisoul y Pepe, quienes tocaban a dúo hace ya algunos años.

Esta foto de La Santa Cecilia, se las tome hace un par de años, en la iglesia Santa Cecilia en Los Angeles. Me gusto la conexión del nombre de la banda con el de la santa patrona de los músicos.

¡Felicidades a los de la Santa!

El reconocido fotógrafo norteamericano Joe McNally creó 246 imágenes tomadas en 2001 a raiz del desastre del 9/11, retrató en tamaño real a rescatistas, victimas, voluntarios, sobrevivientes, familiares de los damnificados, personalidades y a personas que se vieron afectadas por la tragedia sucedida hace diez años.

Fue una experiencia inolvidable presenciar Faces of Ground Zero, las imágenes (polaroids tomadas con una cámara especial que McNally modificó especialmente para ese proyecto).

Este año, para conmemorar el décimo aniversario de los atentados en la ciudad de Nueva York, El Time Warner Center expone trabajos de fotografía y video nuevos con algunos de los personajes de la exhibición pasada capturados por el genial McNally. Su personalidad es muy partícular. Fabián es un Jaguar: le gusta la música de uno de los mejores grupos de rock en español: Jaguares, pero hay más. Se identifica con ese felino por su misticismo, su fortaleza y sigilismo. Ama el campo, la tierra, la naturaleza y a su hembra. Cuida de su territorio como un guerrero. Eso lo hace diferente.

Esas caracteristicas las descubri en Fabián, durante la sesión fotos que le realicé junto con su futura esposa Liz.

En la bella región de Los Altos de Jalisco, tomé esta sesión de fotografía. Era una tarde aagradable y el escenario era espectacular. Los contrastes entre el azul del cielo y la tierra colorada, armonizaban con los matices de los azules agaves.

Gracias Fabián y Liz por permitirme ser parte de esta experiencia que será inolvidable en sus vidas.

Boda civil en La Paz, Baja California Sur
La tranquilidad del mar, su belleza inigualable y esa conjugación indescriptible de sentimientos que despide estar frente a él, es lo que Chucho y Gisell querían para enmarcar su enamoramiento en la primera de sus dos ceremonias, la civil.
Esa magia la encontraron en La Paz, Baja California, México. Esa ciudad, localizada en la Península de Baja California, se caracteriza por su tranquilidad y cálido ambiente.
La ceremonia civil se realizó el sábado 5 de marzo, a bordo de un yate atracado en la marina, frente al hotel La Concha.
Luego, a bordo del mismo yate, los familiares e invitados celebraron la felicidad de los novios – originarios de Jalisco –, en medio del Golfo de California conocido también como Mar de Cortés.
Ahí disfrutaron del paisaje del océano, con sus aguas azul turquesa que se mezclaba con el azul del cielo y contrastaban con las rojizas rocas del desierto californiano.
Los invitados y familiares disfrutaron de la calidez de los novios. Y yo, como fotógrafo, gocé al máximo capturando esos bellos e importantes momentos de felicidad.
Gracias Chucho y Gisell por permitirme documentar esa parte tan especial en sus vidas.

At our beloved 4 year old request, we went out on Halloween night, no big deal.
At our request, we took her out to a couple of Dia de los Muertos celebrations in our city of Angels
I grabbed my Leica and some film to capture some shots, since my M2 lacks a built-in light meter I also took my digital Nikon P7000 to measure my exposures and emulate the settings in the analog camera.
First image shot on the digital PS, the rest with the analog beauty at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Tomorrow Friday I will be documenting the wedding of Vanessa and Manny at this beautiful parish in Los Angeles
Italian romanesque Precious Blood Catholic Church, designed in the late 20′s is an architectural beauty.

In 2005, the small, grinning devil located on a stairwell to the church’s organ loft was featured in a photographic exhibition depicting Los Angeles’s historic religious sanctuaries at the Skirball Cultural Center.

Mexico recently celebrated 200 years of its independence from Spain and 100 from the start of the Revolution.
Los Angeles also celebrated the Bicentennial with a couple of events like the El Grito

After looking at many images shot on film posted on flickr, I recently decided to dust off my Contax 645 and shoot some editorial stuff on film, oh boy I love the results!
The analog way of photographing is just so different since it makes you take your time focusing and framing the subject, I also become more meticulous selecting the background.
Click, reload, click. Then the lab, once the film gets developed and printed I edit the proofs and enjoy the whole process.
Here is a take I like of Ana, the new Señorita Jalisco in Los Angeles.

It was the perfect day to welcome spring, sunny and fresh, a block away from there, shoppers were strolling the famous Rodeo Drive, enjoying a beautiful Saturday.
Inside the hotel, the smell of flowers and the elegant interior design delighted the senses, matching it’s most fantastic architecture.

Beautiful Esmeralda celebrated her quince a couple of years ago, I wanted to do a TTD session at the beach, instead, we did an RTD (recycle the dress) session since her beautiful dress was kept impeccable by her mom.
Why destroy something so nice after all?
I shot some images of her wearing a nice casual outfit at a local park in Goleta, where she lives, then we drove to Burro Beach in Santa Barbara where I captured some images of her wearing the mentioned gown.

Sully and Fernando wanted their wedding photo session to feel totally relaxed, totally laid back.
After their civil ceremony in Beverly Hills, we headed toward Frank Gehry’s masterpiece downtown Los Angeles.
They loved being there, specially at the back of the building where is usually cool and quiet.
I photographed them asking the couple to just be themselves, no awkward poses or
silly moves, just a dash of direction on what to do.
Follow the portrait shoot we drove to Fernando’s place in the Hollywood Hills where the reception took place.
Great place, awesome music and the best food.

Dia de Los Muertos At Hollywood Forever

Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican tradition that celebrates the dead.
The Day of The Dead holiday is observed on November 2nd in Mexico and Latin America, lately more and more people celebrate the tradition on this side of the border.
The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is Los Angeles oldest memorial park, last Saturday they held their annual Dia de los Muertos for the 10th time.
Altars, music, food, art, costumes, vendors, good vibes and a limited parking space.

The annual publication celebrates The Rebozo, a clothing accesory commonly used in Mexico for centuries.
She wears a couple of rebozos on her body and one more on her head showing the many ways to sport this classic garment, some rebozos fly in the air in the background framing her beauty.

I had the opportunity to document their destination wedding at The Newport Beachside Resort in Sunny Isles, Florida.
We all got a break from the stormy weather that they had during the entire week.
No rain on the 4th of July. One more reason to celebrate.

The event was timely coordinated by Tammy Malamud, Catering Manager of the Hotel.
Patricia Ozorio from Shine Salon & Spa was in charge of makeup and hair styling.

Cafe Tacvba one of the most respected rock bands from Mexico is celebrating 20 years of some kick ass good music.
On June 26 they brought their show to Los Angeles as part of their 20/20 Tour. 20 años, 20 Ciudades.
Wow!, what a show, I was happy to see that their performance is getting better with age, just like with good wine.
Rubén, singer of the band, is still so full of energy and his powerful voice rocks.

Backstage I met with some good ol’ friends like Jerry, considered a sound guru by many in the industry.

I shot this image of Jerry back in the 90′s when he was taking care of the LA local scene.

Here is Jerry again, now touring as sound manager for mexican rock band Molotov.
Keep on rocking bro.

Last week I had the honor to attend a photography workshop given by two of the most talented wedding photographers in the industry:
Rodolfo Arpía and Sergio Photographer
The information packed workshop lasted 12 hours each day starting with badass wedding photographer Sergio, what an awesome guy, a workaholic who also shared his techniques during a hands-on photo shoot.
Rudy shared all kinds of information about various aspects of the trade, marketing, SEO, web tools, online services, etc, etc.

I shot this portrait of Debbie with my buddy Rudy’s Contax 645 and fell in love with the camera and the results, the Zeiss lens is a wonderful piece of glass, I love the soft look I got right out of the camera and the best part, I spent zero time in Photoshop.

As a finalist on the Rangefinder Magazine Nikon Take your Best Shot contest, my work is published on this prestigious publication.
The image is of a cowboy or charro doing suertes (tricks) with the rope.
Charrería is a tradition and an old sport from Mexico.
The performer is Francisco Andrade one of the best in the roping artistry.
I wanted to juxtapose the craft with the urban context in the background.

I feel so honored that my image got selected among more than 1700 submissions.

They celebrated their 9th year in business.
Oaxaca has 7 regions, each one with it’s own cultural characteristics, language, traditions, food, and so on.
Some consider Oaxacalifornia the 8th region, the melting pot of all cultures.

Super Monday

Last Monday I had the privilege to attend a photography workshop with one of the most talented wedding photographers in the world.

Jose Villa hosted an all day event at Meadows Restaurant in Solvang California, were we got to learn some technique, marketing strategies, editorial submission tips among other cool stuff.
we even got to spend most of the afternoon shooting with the provided talent.

25 lucky photographers attended the workshop with this super cool guy.

Thanks to the invitation from Rudy Arpia to attend an evening with celebrity wedding photographers Joe Buissink and Denis Reggie at the Pictage users group in Torrance.

There, the two masters shared their philosophy and knowledge with the group.

It was a very nice experience to listen Mr. Reggie since he inspired me to shoot weddings early on my career as a photojournalist and a real privilege to meet Mr. Buissink who I admire not only as a great photographer but as a great person.

I had the honor to videotape the Wedding of Teri and Erick for Photo Studio Ortiz.

My friend Eliseo Ortiz who I also consider my mentor in portrait photography hired me to be his videographer for the event.

From my position during the ceremony I was able to snap some pictures of the couple.

Every year The Federation of Clubs from Jalisco hosts a cultural festival called Semana Jalisco.

The program includes a series of festivities related to the tradition and culture of the Mexican state such as Charreria, Mariachi, Tequila and of course the beauty of their women in the form of a beauty pageant.

The winner is featured on the cover of the organization’s annual magazine.

I had been commissioned to photograph the cover and editorial content of such publication.
